I started having lower left quadrant pain about 5 months ago. Ct Scan was negative/Pelvic Ultrasound showed multiple follicular cysts. Saw GYN Dr. and Gastro Dr., Gastro suspected IBS but treatment for IBS has not been helping and I have always had constipation problems, but pain problem did not start until recently. Pain is almost always there, but gets worse occassionally. Last night, I found that I have extreme abdominal tenderness and I am wondering what is located where I feel the tenderness – It is to the left of the navel, down about 1" and right beside the pelvic bone there, deep within. Also, I have lower back pain. My abdomen feels sore all the time, like it has been injured in some way (but it hasn’t) and almost as if it swells at sometimes. Any help would be greatly appreciated.. I don’t really know where to go from here. Also, I am a 26 year old female in otherwise good health…is abdominal tenderness felt in IBS?
Thanks!

It could be kidney stones, celiac disease, diverticulitis or IBS – or IBD, inflammatory bowel disease. The location you describe is likely your descending colon, and you could have a pocket that gathers fecal matter or gas, causing distention & pain.

The CT probably ruled out kidney stone, and if you had pain in the lower left quadrant, your ureter would likely be obstructed. This could lead to back pain. Again, make sure the radiologist specifically looked for an obstructing renal calculus.

A colonoscopy should be able to discriminate between celiac, diverticulitis/diverticulosis, IBS and IBD. Make sure you get a reservation for this early in the new year. And you always want to rule out colon cancer, which CAN strike well before age 50, when most screening begins.
